Could someone help me get through this context? 1) "If she could acquire a disability, which ...." Does "she" refer to Iona? 2) "Navigate your way around those, Brenda-from-HR." Who is saying this - is it Iona? 3) "Anyhow, maybe downscaling could be ..." Is it Ed who's saying this?

#1) Yes, "she" is Iona. #2) Yes, these are Iona's thoughts. She imagines herself saying this to the Human Resources person, Brenda, who is present in the room with her and Ed. She doesn't say these thoughts out loud. She is talking to herself. That is why italics are used. #3) Ed is saying this.
