At the theatre is more general, you are at the location of the theatre. You could be inside, at the door, in the parking lot etc. In the theatre is specifically inside the building. In the theatre can also mean "concerning the theatre as a profession". For example, "in the theatre, it is common to avoid saying the name of the play Macbeth to prevent bad luck"
