Firstly, I think we should change our mindset. I am not sure what people from western
countries think about environmental protection, but I think many people of
Hong Kong ( adults ) have no idea about it. Everytime when I suggest no
drinking straws or turn off the air conditioning in the winter, they are sarcastic
to it.
For us, supermarkets are not allowed to sell party plastic plates, cups, forks, spoons and straws anymore. It is also quite common now to bring our own reusable shopping bags when we shop for groceries at the supermarket so we don't take any new single use plastic bags every time we shop.
There are some documentaries on TV that help highlight the problem so people here are a little more aware and open to changes. But there is still a LOT more that can be done.
Like you, my wife and I also don't take any straws when we eat out, we just drink straight from the cup. But I can see other customers around us still using straws so some restaurants here still supply them unfortunately. :(
