Traditional Chinese Characters had been popular in China for more than 1000 years and it is will writen and read by people living in HK and Taiwan. Some of the Chinese literary scholars in Mainland China also have to learn traditional chinese characters to read ancient literary.

Simplied Chinese Characters were launched in the age of 1950 principally because of the high illiterate rate in China then. But as a matter of fact, the illiterate rate of Chinese does not have strong correlation with the complex Traditional Chinese Characters according current Chinese research.  Although some scholars in China advocated to reinstate the Traditional Chinese Characters but I guess that Simple Chinese character writing in the whole Chinese society will keep and will be passed down to the next generations.

Just to be clear, I forgot to mention this, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese are not languages.  They are ways to write.  The languages would be like Mandarin, Shanghainese, Taiwanese, Cantonese, etc.

I'll use an example of what she wrote.

This is Traditional:  我是台灣人 我的母語是繁體中文

This is Simplified:   我是台湾人 我的母语是繁体中文

Some characters are exactly the same and some are different.  You can see how some of the Traditional have more strokes and are basically more "complicated."  This is why they call it Simplified because it seeks to ease the learning burden of Traditional writing and make it easier.

Simplified Chinese was brought about in the 1950's as a way to promote literacy.  It's less complicated and easier to learn than Traditional Chinese which is what was used for many years.

They still use Traditional Chinese in Taiwan and in Hong Kong.  It's also used on signs for businesses and for formal occasions etc.  But in mainland China, Simplified is what is used for everything and is used in legal documents, court proceedings, and contracts.
