What tense should I use with "hace un rato"?

I'm torn between what tense I should use with "hace un rato".

For instance, which of these sentences is correct?

1) He lavado los platos hace un rato

2) lavé los platos hace un rato

Gracias por la ayuda!!!

I was told by a friend of mine that both are correct depending on what kind of Spanish you Speak. For instance, he told me that in Spain they say the first option.

hi, "hace un rato" could be use to talk about an action to happened a few time ago, for example you can say "hace un rato termine mi examen de español" or you can use an informal way "hace poco termine mi examen de español" I hope this comment could help you
