Go Nuts
If someone goes nuts, they get excited, frustrated or crazy about somthing . Examples:
-The passengers went nuts when they realized that their plane would be delayed by 5 hours;
-I will go nuts if my team wins the championship!
Did you know…? This idiom is sometimes phrased ‘driving me nuts’.
Example: That constant repetitive music is driving me nuts.
Old joke:
Q: What is the most dangerous part of an automobile?
A: The nut behind the wheel.
This is a pun, because a "nut" is a fastening device, part of a "nut and bolt:"
When you hear "the nut behind the wheel," your first thought it that it is a metal nut that fastens the steering wheel to the steering column. It sounds like a real mechanical part of an automobile. A split-second later, you realize it means "the crazy driver, who sits behind the steering wheel."
Thank you Nate, Mr lance, dan smith,
for your Clarifications.
I also read some other synonyms in British English like :
To " go mental ",
To " flip out ",
To" go off it ",
(although they can all mean both 'go mad' and 'get angry' depending on the context).
Hi Lamyae,
That's right.
We also use the idiom "nuts about" to express great excitement for something or to express deep love for someone.
Example: The teenagers were nuts about the superstar. / He was nuts about his new girlfriend.
We also use simply "nuts" to refer to a psychotic and foolish person.
Example: He is planning to sue me for not agreeing to give him a loan. He's nuts.
Cheers, Lance
go nuts can mean to get really angry, or really excited (ecstatic).
drive someone nuts means you really irritated them.
Examples:
"He went nuts when he realized he had won the lottery." - Ecstatic
"She went nuts when she was placed under arrest." - Angry
"Stop popping your gum. It's driving me nuts." - Irritated
So... "go nuts" and "drive <someone> nuts" are not really synonymous. The former can mean Anger or Ecstasy.
The latter almost always means irritation.
Most native speakers wouldn't say "Steph Curry drove the audience nuts when he hit that three pointer."
They will usually say "The audience went nuts when Steph Curry hit that three pointer."
