I haven't had a lot of luck finding Spanish movies I like, but I do love watching Spanish series on Netflix.
They come with English subtitles of course. I also started out watching with English subtitles, but recently switched to Spanish ones.
Some I like are:
- El sexo débil (Mexico)
- El clon (Mexico/Colombia)
- El secretario (Colombia)
- Los hombres también lloran (Colombia)
- Club de cuervos (Mexico)
Como Agua para Chocolate) (1992) is one I watched in my "Culture through Cinema" class when getting my degree. It's a great movie, and I really should read the book sometime. Not a feel good movie, however.
María, llena eres de gracia- (2004) is about a drug mule, and is hard watching at times, but a great movie.
I just started watching Isabel, a TV show from Spain. It's about Queen Isabel (of Columbus fame) and has great costumes. I found it on Drama Fever with subtitles in English, but can't find the Spanish subtitles which I really want. Be aware of the weird use of vos (not vosotros). It annoyed me at first, but now that I'm a couple of episodes in I'm used to it. Drama Fever is a streaming service that specializes in Korean stuff, but is starting to add Spanish stuff for the North American market. I found out about it from a thread like this one on another site.
I'm glad you started this discussion, I want more ideas!
In my opinion, Spanish speaking movies are the absolute best movies to watch!

-Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios
-El laberinto del fauno
-the devil's Backbone
-El orfanato
-El internado (Netflix series)
