I was chatting on FB and a guy wrote in a comment and mentioned my name " Mohit: PUT DOWN THE TRUMP KOOL AIDE!"
what did he mean?
The person didn't quite have the correct reference. It's "Kool Aid". Kool Aid is an artificially flavored powdered beverage that you add water and sugar to drink.
The cultural reference here is a cult leader named Reverend Jim Jones and the tragedy of Guyana. Realizing that his commune was coming to an end, he mixed cynanide with Kool Aid and asked his followers to follow him and drink the deadly conconction to commit suicide, and most of his followers did. So the idea of "drinking Kool Aid" is a reference to someone following blindly what he/she is told to do.
"so, Put down the Trump Kool-Aid = Drink the Kool-Aid ??"
No, it's the opposite. "Put down" implies that you must be holding a drink in your hand, and you are about to drink it. The person is saying "put it down!"
To put something down means that you lower your hand and place the object (in this case, the drink) on the table, and do not touch it any more.
