In Japan there is a curse as evil eye. Angry, greedy, jealous person who want to kill someone make a doll with straws. He looks at the straw doll as someone that he wants to kill. Then he hammers a nail into the dall on the pillar. It's scary scene. No worries! It is a fiction. I don't know when this fake habit(action?) started. Maybe since Edo period, two hundred years ago. 

Someone says in Zen lecture which is one of Buddhism, "If you want to agonize, I'll give you three poisons. Anger. greediness and  Jealousy."  The three poison make your evil eye.

And we have a proverb that says, "The nail that sticks up gets hammered down"  to be humble. But recently I heard another one that says, "The nail sticks up too much never gets hammered down". to encourage being aggressive in positive way. Or the meaning might be that  too foolish behavior is disregarded.

I've heard about the people in my country who attach the red ribbon to the newborn child's bed to protect the child against evil eye.

When the new child is born everybody want to come to visit and see the baby. Sometimes a crowd of family and friends (even distant ones) walks through a house during the first months of children's life. Some people say that someone may curse the child because of jealousy or sometimes even unintentionally.

Of course these are old stories repeated since many generations, but even people who declare they don't believe it, do it often 'just in case'.

The evil way someone looks at another person, usually without the other person seeing the person staring at them, is called the evil eye. The evil eye is a curse believed to be cast by an angry or hateful glare. Many cultures believe that receiving the evil eye will cause misfortune or injury.

Many cultures have created articles that can be worn and they believe these articles will protect them from the harm of someone giving them the evil eye (i.e., protecting the wearer against the curse).

This belief is common throughout western Asia, parts of Africa, and the middle east.

This superstition is not popular in North America.

So, if someone looked at me with an evil eye (looking at me like they are angry or hate me), I would simply ask them "What's your problem?"

Some people also believe that the curse will jinx the other person, i.e. the curse will bring bad luck to the person.

Again, North Americans, in general, do not believe in jinxes.
