I’m from Australia, here are some slang words that are common in Australia. Hope these help a little bit

Maccas = McDonald’s

Bottl-o = bottle shop/alcohol shop

servo = service station/ petrol station

arvo = afternoon

Esky = cooler box

Ute = utility vehicle/ pick up truck

biro = pen

Aussie = Australian

convo = conversation

gas bag = speaking a lot/having a chat

fair dinkum (only old people usually use this word) = the truth of something...(kind of like saying wow! When hearing something crazy or amazing)

as you can see, we shorten a lot of words, we are quite lazy with our conversations.

if you want to hear a strong Australian accent and a lot of Australian slang, I would suggest to you watching an Australian comedy called “Kath and Kim”. But I must stress that it is a comedy and very very exaggerated, most Australians are not like this! But they use a lot of words that Australians use everyday.

hope this helps a bit :)

American English and Australian English aren't that different when comparing the standard forms of the language. The grammar differences between the two will be fairly similar to the grammar differences between American English and British English and there will be, of course, some differences in vocabulary. Now, if both speakers are using a lot of slang, then things get a whole lot more interesting. :)

Hi Keyla,

Send me a message if you want to have a chat sometime. I've lived in Australia for 20 years. I'm happy to schedule a conversation with you so that you can hear the Australian accent and ask some questions about Australia.
