Dubbed Movies
When I travel to different countries, especially in Europe, I see that most of Hollywood movies in theaters are dubbed. In my humble opinion, movies should only be subtitled in order to give people around the world the chance to learn English through entertainment.

Are movies/series/programs dubbed in your country? Do you think they should be dubbed in order to protect your country’s language? Do you think there would more people speaking English if dubbing was not considered in the media?

Share with us what you think :)

All the movies are dubbed in Russia and it’s a pity. You can barely find an original one in a movie theater, especially outside Moscow. Firstly, it’s because the vast majority of the population don’t understand English. Secondly, it’s kinda law or so.
Therefore, the only option is looking for movies on the Internet (generally, pirate resources) and watching them at home.

In Germany, English movies and TV series are in general dubbed. It's possible to watch original versions in the cinema and of course now with streaming services like Netflix but most Germans still prefer dubbed versions. The voices of the German actors are more famous than the actual voices of the actors. Yes, in country where English movies aren't dubbed, people are often better at English but as German and English are closely related Germans manage to reach an ok level in English despite mainly watching dubbed movies. I only learnt English at school and until my mid-twenties I only watched dubbed movies but I think my English still turned out ok. Not everyone wants to excel in foreign languages. I think it's ok to have dubbed versions for those people who just want to enjoy a relaxed evening. Also, honestly, I like watching dubbed movies in other languages. Let's say an American movie dubbed to Chinese. It's easier for Chinese learners to understand than an originally Chinese movie. Actually, I find it a pity that Netflix rarely offers versions dubbed into other languages. I'd love to watch movies and TV series that I already know in other target languages.

I think that the audience get used on their first experience with cinema. I mean the first thing you watch and you find entertaining, you will like it and you won’t accept changing. In Arab world we get used on watching English movies with Arabic subtitles so we don’t find any interest in watching them dubbed. While, Turkish series were firstly streamed as dubbed with Shami dialect so we find it unentertaining to watch in in Turkish language or even in any other dialect.

In my country dubbing isn't popular. Here most of the moovies and series are translated and readen by the lectors. The biggest value of it is that you can hear the original dialogues in the background. I think that it can be helpful in lerning languages - especially for the kidds. I know how helpful it was for me when I was a kidd in the 90's. and I watched American (and other) cartoons and shows. That's why I know some words and phrases in many languages. :-)
