Please Help - Lesson Prices
Hello,

I am a new teacher on Italki and am trying to set up my prices. I'm being told that $8 is the minimum I can charge for a lesson. Is there a reason for this - I can see many other teachers charging much less ($4ph) than me and so I'm finding it difficult to get students being new.

So this is my price for 1 hour. However because of this I am unable to utilise any other time duration. If I wish for example to have a 30 minute class offering, I can also not put a price lower than $8. Similarly I can't package any lessons for less than $8 per lesson so they really have no value.

Please can someone help ?

Thanks both. Yes I am a professional teacher. I wanted to make lower prices to build up some reviews. I can see there are some professional teachers offering lower prices for informal conversation classes - I am unable to do this :(

Further, If $8 if the lowest I can charge it makes the packages and 30 minute classes redundant.

I asked technical support waiting for their response.

Thank you , I appreciate your fast responses :)

Hola, Zelaida. Imagino que no puedes cobrar menos porque estás acreditada como docente profesional. Solo los tutores pueden hacer eso. De todas formas, quizás es mejor que consultes con el soporte técnico.

I would start off with low prices and over time, depending on the amount of lessons you teach, gradually increase your prices. You should be able to put a price lower than $8 for a half hour but it might be different for teachers compared to tutors. My half hour is only $7.50. But a year or so ago it was $5.00 I think.

I don't think that lower prices are always good. Some people associate lower prices with lower quality.

It depends on what kind of students you want to attract. If I was looking for a professional teacher, I'd definitely be willing to pay more than 8 dollars for a lesson.

Best of luck with your teaching!

It's tough. Frankly, I would recommend new teachers begin as a community tutor, even if they're fully qualified to be a professional teacher. It would allow you to take some time to build up feedback and good lesson numbers, and incrementally raise your prices as you develop a following of students.

Italki then allows you to switch to professional teacher, if you have the qualifications. You might consider asking Italki if you can "switch back" to being a community tutor, although I'm not sure if they will do so.

Edit: You might be able to offer a low price on trial lessons? It's something, at least.
