There are many good songs from different periods but some of the songs that come to mind now are:

70's - Aqualung by Jethro Tull. Another brick in the wall by Pink Floyd. Cecilia by Simon & Garfunkel.

80's - Mama by Genesis. Woman in love by Barbara Streisand. Take my breath away by Berlin.

90's - Nothing Compares 2 U by Sinéad O'Connor. November Rain by Guns N' Roses. Love is all around -- Wet Wet Wet version. I also like the original version of 60's by Troggs.

Hard to chose just one from each decade but here goes.

90's Losing My Relgion-REM

Which in fact has nothing to do with religion but it is a term from the southern US refering to being really upset.  similar to the idiom...at my wits end.

80's Take On Me-Aha)

70's-Bohemian Rhapsody-Queen

The same of a song I don't remember when new singers or other singers to change melody that doesn't sound so good to drive a new song from older melody.

If you also notice about classic melody made with classic music instrument, you will know more about how they develop pop songs from classic music, such as Western life.

Sorry I remember how to listen to the English older love songs but not names.

Some days ago, I found "Passionate Fruit - Wonderland". I have nice memories connected to that song.
