My 30th Birthday Speech
Tomorrow is my 30th birthday. People say it’s a milestone in life. I have invited about twenty guests including my close friends and students to dinner tomorrow night. I want to give a speech during dinner and thank them for coming on my birthday. Please correct me if you spot any mistake. Thank you!
Dear Friends,
Thank you for coming to my birthday party. I’m no longer a spring chicken. I’m officially thirty. I also feel that I have more wrinkles and have started getting old. No wonder they say when you are over thirty, you are “on the wrong side of thirty!” But the truth is, I can’t be happier. Last year, I had only four people on my birthday dinner and I got 10 birthday wishes on Facebook! Actually, I was feeling miserable for a while in Shanghai. I was lost and I made my fiancé worried. I blamed my depression on the environment and everything here. I even thought of leaving and starting over again.
But I love my fiancé too much to leave him. For better or worse, I want to be with the person who made me smile.
So this year has been a transformation year for me. My student in 2K, Shirlene, introduced me to Matthew (who is now a dear friend and wishes to be here today but he can’t. His girlfriend, Joslyn, is here though.), and I started teaching him Mandarin and then he introduced me to EA.
In the mean time, I started exploring the language exchange and met Kelly. (The handsome black man who is sitting there.) He has the most positive attitude and his zest for life is incredible. Then I met an elegant lady through an interview, Quenby, who then made me her English teacher. She’s so fun to talk with and sometimes she makes me wonder if I should pay her for class. Then I had a chance to teach in an English institution called City English. The people I met there are so nice and their love and support for me is almost overwhelming! Of course the people whose names I haven’t mentioned (or, "people who I haven't mentioned by name,") have to know that you are all very special to me! You changed me.
Finally, I want to give thanks to my fiancé, Damian, who had never given up on me when I was dark and gloomy. Next year, January 10th is his 32nd birthday. I’m going to give him a big birthday present - which is to promise to be his wife. We might have a big celebration in Shanghai, and I hope you can all join us to celebrate our love then.
Thank you and hope that you have a blast!
