English test should be removed from China’s college entrance exam （debate） Long time no see, everyone. I have been busy with some exams. Now I want to share a small notebook about a debate I had last week. We had a heated discussion. I will deeply appreciate it, if you can help me with correction. The English test will be removed from China’s college entrance exam by 2020, according to details of exam and admission reform revealed by the Ministry of Education. This decision has aroused a heated discussion from society. The national college entrance exam, known as ‘gaokao’ has been used to evaluate Chinese students for three decades. This English test has many disadvantages, so in our mind, this test should be canceled, the reasons are as follows: 1. Only one kind of English exam for all the national high school students. All the students have to take this exam no matter what your interests are, if you want to go to college. That means, a student who is very good at art, but he can’t go to his dream ideal university because of his poor English. And also, you only have one chance for this exam. You are a good learner, you can get high grades in practice, however, you don’t play well for gaokao, and it means you lost your chance, you can’t go to your ideal university, too. This situation make students embarrassed. It is unfair, personally I think. 2. There is something wrong with the content of the exam. The content is very formal, not for daily life. There are also many complex vocabularies, students don’t know these words. Moreover, the test pays more attention to reading and writing than speaking and using English. 3. English is more than a language, for Chinese, it is a kind of tool. We use it for daily life, maybe for our job, our hobby and our dream. What we need for learning a language is the language environment, what we need for a tool is to use it. In students’ view, English, maybe, is a test for college, what they need for the test is skills which can help them good grades. 4. Nowadays, for high school students, they have too much homework and too much pressure. Instead of the test now, tests will be held several times a year to allow students to choose when and how they sit the exam so as to reduce the pressure and change this once-in-a lifetime exam system. 5. Before, we learn English to know the world, now, we learn English to promote our national culture. To sum up, we believe that the English test should be canceled from gaokao.
