My cell phone was stolen last week!
When I was on the a bus with my wife, I found tourists who seemed to have problems about bus tickets. I put my cell phone in my pocket and told them how to validate their tickets. After that, I tried to use my phone, but I couldn't find it in my pocket. I couldn't didn't understand what happened, but I realized right away it was stolen by someone.

I went to the police to report a theft soon. The officer asked me for my IMEI number, called meaning international mobile equipment identity. I didn't know it until then. Almost all mobile phones have this number and if a cell phone was stolen, you could ask the mobile operator to stop the use of it even though the SIM card was taken over. They say that this system helps the decrease of resale of mobile phones. Actually I don't expect that my phone come back, but it was good to keep my information existing on my phone.

In the US, the technology is there but is never activated.  This is because all the phone sellers (ie the phone companies themselves) are against this because buying another phone due to theft is a big business for them!  So they are in cohoots with the phone reselling business!
