The contributions of scientists and engineers are more important than that of artists and writers There have always been a lot of people making big contributions to develop the society we live in. They are professional in many fields such as science, engineering, art and literature. It may hard to say who has the most influential status in terms of influencing our society. However, I would say that the works have been done by artists and writers are more important for the following reasons. Firstly. It is true scientists and engineers have created numerous inventions that we use everyday in this society and they have improved our lives in more effective, faster and convenient ways. But the sources of all the inventions are coming from the ideas and theories established by many early philosophers who were also writers. For example, the philosophers in Greece were the founders of the scientific theories such as what materials are mainly consisting of our nature world. They used scientific methods on the basis of their observations, experience and analysis to find out the answers. Some found out that the materials are water, light and air; other thought that they are gold, shiver and metal. Later in history, scientists and engineers embarked on the farther development of those theories which leads to significant inventions to emerge. Additionally, we all know that the most precious things in our lives are usually invisible such as love, hope, friendship, self-confidence, brave, belief and so on. Artists and writers are the people who keep reminding us these things in our monotonous and routine lives. Not only they always urge us not to seek for the material things which can make us blind and damage our happy lives but also they teach us how to appreciate the beauty and joy brought by life through their paintings, statues, novels and sometimes through their real voices. I learned the true meaning of our lives from a book called "A Little Prince". The prince in the book tells us that do not forget the most important things in your life and cherish them well before they leave and disappear. Maybe that is why the book has been a bestseller until now even though it just gives a simple lesson for us. For the reasons I mentioned above, without the theories, ideas, thoughts and lessons from many artists and writers, the true developments and improvements in this society would never had happened. Therefore, I strongly believe that the contributions of artists and writers are far more influential and significant than that of scientists and engineers.

The reason why I wrote this was to practice my writing for the TOEFL test. And the full title was "The contributions of scientists and engineers are more important than that of artists and writers. Do you agree with this statement? Use specific reasons to support your answer." Because of the word limitation, I couldn't write this all and you may not know that it doesn't matter what I really think about this statement in the real test. In fact, I could have written in an opposite way. Also, I did not say that the achievements of scientists and enginners are useless and have no meaning. I wrote the essay in this way in order to meet the requirements of the test. So I suggest that you also have an unbiased opinion considering that everything in this world has pros and cons.

Your title is in full contrast with what you suggest in your writing. As for your arguments, I think the reason we can have this discussion right now is that a group of genius people invented computers and internet (special thanks goes to italki for sure :) ) With all due respect, I believe just the opposite is true. I'm an amateur artist myself, but it's fair to admit that scientists and engineers do not receive the attention they deserve. It all goes to useless artists, writers and so on. After all, maybe that's the dynamic. Some losers create an insanely magnificent work just to be noticed by crowds of people who are chasing after useless pop stars :)

The contributions of scientists and engineers are more important than that of artists and writers

There have always been many people making big contributions to develop the society we live in. They are professionals in many fields such as science, engineering, art and literature. It may be hard to say who has the largest impact in terms of influencing our society. However, I would say that the works created by artists and writers are more important for the following reasons.

(Most influential status is correct, but I changed it to largest impact because you don't want to use the same word twice in a sentence.)

Firstly. It is true scientists and engineers have created numerous inventions that we use everyday in this society and they have improved our lives in more effective, faster and convenient ways. But the sources of all the inventions come from the ideas and theories established by many early philosophers who were also writers. For example, the ancient philosophers in Greece were the founders of the scientific theories such as what materials our natural world mainly consists of. They used the scientific method based on their observations, experience and analysis to find answers. Some found out that the materials are water, light and air; others thought that they are gold, silver and metal. Later in history, scientists and engineers embarked on the further development of those theories which lead to the emergence of significant inventions.

Additionally, we all know that the most precious things in our lives are usually invisible such as love, hope, friendship, self-confidence, bravery, beliefs and so on. Artists and writers are the people who keep reminding us of these things in our monotonous and routine lives. Not only do they always urge us not to seek material things which can make us blind and damage our happy lives but they also teach us how to appreciate the beauty and joy brought by life through their paintings, statues, novels and sometimes through their real voices. I learned the true meaning of our lives from a book called "A Little Prince". The prince in the book tells us do not forget the most important things in your life and cherish them well before they leave and disappear. Maybe that is why the book has been a bestseller until now even though it just gives a simple lesson.

For the reasons I mentioned above, without the theories, ideas, thoughts and lessons from many artists and writers, the true developments and improvements in this society would never had happened. Therefore, I strongly believe that the contributions of artists and writers are far more influential and significant than that of scientists and engineers.

Very well done!
