悯 农 The Peasant's Lot / The Pitying the Peasant

锄禾日当午，chú hé rì dāng wǔ (A farmer )Hoeing the grass under the noonday sun,
汗滴禾下土。hàn dī hé xià tǔ His sweat drips on the ground beneath the seedling.
谁知盘中餐飱 (sūn)，shuí zhī pán zhōng cān Who knows that the meal in the dish,
粒粒皆辛苦。lì lì jiē xīn kǔ Every single grain of rice means hardwork.
锄chú，动词，除草。 Verb, hoe, get rid of the grass from crops by a hoe, hoeing.

A more refined translation.

Tilling the grains under the midday sun,

Sweat dripping onto the plants and then onto the ground.

Who knows that on the plate of every evening meal,

Each grain comes from exhausting toil.

A farmer is hoeing the grass cereal plants under the noonday sun, and his sweat drips on the ground beneath the seedling. Who knows that those grains on the plate of each evening meal, each and  in , even every single grain of rice, means comes from hardwork.

诗人用非常粗疏的笔调勾勒出一幅田间劳动的场景，体现了农民种田的辛苦，提醒人们粮食来之不易，应当珍惜。
The poet outlines a picture of farmers working on the farm with coarse and thin style, which reflects the laborious of famers and reminds people that the grain is not earned easily, and should be cherished. The poet uses very unadorned wording to express the depiction of the hard life of farmers.  This poem is to remind us that grains of rice do not magically appear before us.  We must cherish the result of their toil.

联想到那些富贵人家丰盛的“盘中餐”，每每一粒米都是烈日之下辛勤劳作流下的汗水换来的呵！通过与前两句的鲜明的对比，使我们看到了诗人对农民的同情与敬重，及对不平等的现实的不满。
Imagine the meal in the dish on the wealth’s table. Every grain of rice is at the cost of the sweat of farmers who work hard under the sun. By comparing with the previous sentences, the poem shows pity and respect of the poet for the farmers and his unsatisfaction with the unfair truth.

Imagine the food on the plate of the wealthy. Each grain of rice results from the sweat of the farmer's brows.  From these two lines, we can see how the poet's compassion and respect are towards the farmer and his dissatisfaction about life's inequality.
