My notebook entry:
The graph illustrates the change of the quantities of good transported by four different transport means in the period between 1974 and 2002 in the UK.
The amount of goods transported by road took up the largest proportion among those modes of transport, increasing slowly from 70 million tonnes during the first 20 years, but mushroomed in the following four years and finally came to 100 million tonnes in 2002. Transported by pipeline was also popularized in these years, from merely 5 million in 1974 tonnes to 22 million tonnes in 1995, and leveled off till 2002.
The figures for good transported by water and rail had two distinct trends. Both of them started from 40 million tonnes, however, the figures for water rose to 60 million tonnes and stayed at this level for almost 10 years before it climbed for the second time in 2000 while that of rail was under 40 million tonnes for nearly 35 years until it went back again by the year of 2002.
In conclusion, although other three had undertaken part of delivery, the road was still the main mean during this time span in the UK.
