Is It Harmful That Media Tends to Focus on Problems And Emergencies?
Today, news reported by the media tends to focus on problems and emergencies rather than positive developments. Some people think that is harmful to both individuals and society. Do you agree or disagree with this view?
Nowadays, some people believe that it is harmful to both individuals and society to report a large number of social problems and emergency situations on media. I partly agree with this opinion.
The reason of less and less positive developments of the society and more and more informations about social problems and emergencies reported by the media is because the frequency of such problems and emergencies, like car accidents and building fires, is higher than before today. But it is true that this will make people under bigger anxiety and stress as they may believe that the society they live has risk hazards and is not safe to live any longer. In addition, such reports will cause people becoming more and more indifferent and never be sympathetic to problems and emergencies happened around them.
However, I also agree that problems and emergencies reported by the media also bring positive effects into the society to some extent. Such information about social problems, like poverty, gender discrimination and so forth, can increase the awareness of the public and hence it will get the public support and government funding to solve them.
On the other hand, the media can also provide information of emergencies, such as earthquake and floods, to people especially those people whose family or friends has trouble in affected area but they cannot go there because of the natural disasters causing broken bridge. Although they cannot go to the effected area but they can get information from the media, which can help them to know more instant news about their family and friends. Also, it can give information to the charitable organization to know the amount of money needed.
In conclusion, I think that the media focus on reporting social problems and emergency situation has both positive and negative effects. It needs the regulation of the government to make sure that the media provide more objective and fair reports, and finally eliminate the negative effects.
