Exercise 1 - English (Using Past Simple, Past Continuous, or Past Perfect)
1) I was waiting to play tennis yesterday when my partner called me to say that he couldn't come because his car had broken down.
2) Ireland beat England yesterday. England waswere winning 1:0 (or one nil) in the first half but Ireland scored two goals in the second half.
3) We were late. When we arrived everyone havehad finished their lunch and they were sitting in the garden having coffee.
4) I runran to the station but the six o'clock train had already left. The station was empty except for three people who were waiting for the next train.
5) It started raining whenwhile he was walking to work. He stoppedhailed a taxi because he wasn't wearing a coat and he hadn'tdidn't have an umbrella (optional: with him).
6) They were driving to the airport when they suddenly remembered that they hadn't turned off the central heating.
7) I didn't recognise many people at my old school reunion because everyone had changed a lot in twenty years.
8) The match had already started when we turned on the TV (or: turned the TV on. Scotland waswere losing 1:0 and they had playedwere playing very badly.
