http://www.thefreedictionary.com/cleanse http://www.thefreedictionary.com/clean cleanse = To free from dirt, defilement, or guilt; purge or clean. Although the difference is small, pay good attention. You'll figure it out.

Cleanse isn't really used as a verb very often. Scripturally, "Jesus cleansed the people of their sins." I will clean my house today. I would not say, "I cleansed my house yesterday." It's correct just sort of archaic.

For your question, it must be "What is the difference between...?" "Different" is only an adjective. "the difference" is a noun.

You can use both as a verb. But "clean" is used more frequently.

Clean means a place or a spot that is free of dust or dirt. Eg: This bench is really clean. Cleanse means action or verb, meaning act of cleaning.. Eg: I cleansed this place yesterday. :) :)
