The two phrasal verbs "throw out" and "throw away" are synonyms in the sense both mean "discard". In that sense, I might mark a very minor distinction between them if I am talking about discarding something from inside, like my home, to an outside depository, in which case I would say "throw out". Both verbs have other meanings in addition to "discard".

These are phrasal verbs, # "Throw out" Throwing something out is the physical activity of discarding something, either by placing it in the trash or removing it from your home. and # "Throw away" Throwing something away is the conceptual activity of discarding something, either by removing contact with it from your life or shedding a particular behavior. . . @Physical objects such as food, clothes, toys, etc... can be thrown out or thrown away when they are discarded. I can't think of any rules about using one vs. the other for objects. "Throw away that milk, it's old." "My phone was broken so I threw it out." . @Conceptual things are thrown away. "Don't throw away your life by using drugs." "By working so hard all the time you're throwing away your youth." "I threw away my chance to meet her, I was too scared to say anything." "Money is thrown away when it is used unwisely." "If you go to a casino you're just throwing away your money." "People are thrown out when they are removed from a home." "My mom found my dad drunk again so she threw him out." "The party got so loud I had to throw everyone out." "I will also note pride is "swallowed" when it's discarded, not thrown out/away." "Swallow your pride and ask for help." you can get me at www.facebook.com/AhsanAmu
