I don't think Descarte's philosophical phrase would have the same effect if he had said "Je pense, alors je suis"...I think, so I am. Donc is more formal and has the meaning of therefore, which Damien expressed in terms of a logical deduction or the result of a hypothesis and conclusion. Alors is a bit more conversational and less "heavy". For example, I explain a problem to you and you can suggest...Alors, qu'est-ce qu'on va faire? So, what are we going to do (about this)? Or you could be more decisive and proactive and incite me by asking Donc, qu'est-ce qu'on va faire? Therefore, what are we going to do (about this)? Even by itself you can ask someone: Et donc? And...what's your point? Why should I care? Et alors?...So what?...what's the matter? What does that change? But it all really depends on the context and intonation of the speaker.

Yes both of them mean so. But they are slightly different. "Donc" is like when you demonstrate smth, it's strong whereas "alors" is less strong. When you say "Je suis français donc j'aime le pain", it's like you make a proof and it's logical. Whereas "Je suis français alors j'aime le pain" it's just a connexion. Les deux sont très semblables, utilisé l'un ou l'autre ne change pas grand chose :) L'emplacement du mot peut rendre la phrase plus ou moin soutenue aussi. Par exemple "Je suis passée devant la boulangerie, donc (alors) je suis aller chercher du pain" c'est plus familier (à dire avec tes amis, quand tu parles...) "Je suis passée devant la boulangerie, je suis donc (alors) aller chercher du pain" est beaucoup plus soutenue, il faut plutot l'utiliser à l'écrit quand tu écris une histoire ect... Mais la première version est la plus utilisée et la plus simple même si tu parles à quelqu'un de haut gradé, et utiliser "Alors" ou "Donc" ne change pas grand chose...
