To add to Jerry's answer:
* The Legislative branch (the Senate and the House) makes the law. Senators and congressmen are elected directly by the people of their state.
* The Executive branch (the President) signs the law. The President does NOT get elected by the people. In the basic terms, the people in a state vote for a group of representatives, who promise to elect a particular president. This happens in November, and then this group of representatives vote to elect the President in January.
* The Judicial branch (the Court) interprets the law. The president nominates a Supreme Court Justice. The congress then approves the Justice, who has the job for life.
