Struggle vs. Fight... What's the difference? Could anyone help me and tell me what's the difference between these two verbs? Are they interchangeable? Or is there any important difference according to the context? Thanks in advance!

Hi, great question! "Fight" is a much stronger word than "struggle" and generally implies that two or more parties are fighting against each other. Struggle, however, is usually used to show that someone is making an attempt to get away from some type of restraint ("The dog struggled against his leash") or violence. (it is more one sided. One person is restraining or attacking, and the other is trying to get away). Often, when "struggle" is used, it can imply that the person being attacked/restrained did not succeed in escaping. "Struggle" can also mean to have difficulty doing something, to make a strenuous effort to accomplish something. Examples: "My fingers were so cold that I struggled to tie my shoes." "I have been so depressed lately. It is a struggle just to get out of bed."

Hi Rodrigo, Good question. The meaning is different although you can use them interchangeably for variety when writing depending on what you want to say. “Struggle” has a meaning independent of “fight” as below: To struggle - the action of attempting to achieve something which at the same time is a difficult challenge. Not necessarily physical (e.g. ‘she struggled to understand what he wanted’). To fight - to participate in an exchange with another force, indicating passion, determination or violence. Physical action is implied but is also not necessary (e.g. ‘They were fighting a lot and the neighbors were worried’ or ‘she was fighting for each breath when she was swimming in the triathlon’). I hope this makes it clearer. Many words are similar and used interchangeably in English (and other languages of course) but if you look at the etymology of the word you can see there is a usually a difference in the history or original meaning. I think this is carried on through the language which is why accurate use of language makes someone seem articulate! Take care, Triss
