What is the different between a "package" and a "parcel" in American and British English?

In general they mean the same thing. From an American English perspective I see a 'parcel' as somewhat more official sounding than a package. As in I could imagine a parcel having a guard or some security whereas a package by comparison is just something I get in the mail.
