"tangle" vs "entangle" Hi there, Could someone please tell me if there is any difference between "tangle" and "entangle"? 1. They freed the whale which had become "entangled" in the fishing net. 2. They freed the whale which had become "tangled" in the fishing net. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks, Nanako

Technically, if something gets tangled with itself, but something becomes entangled in something else. To give you an example: They freed the whale which had become entangled in the fishing net. The fisherman's line wasn't put away properly and got tangled up. In the first example, the whale becomes entangled in the net. In the second example, the line becomes tangled with itself. I hope this helps, let me know if you have any more questions!

No difference in any dictionary. Both mean to become twisted together or to become involved (when speaking about people). En before a word is just a past particle or to cause or to make. so entangled is the past of being in a tangle. the past of the cause of the tangle. En also has other meanings before a word "how did you get tangled up with that boy" = past with no En "you will regret becoming entangled with that boy" = also past the en can be removed both the same, although the first sentence is probably more natural to most english speakers. "the boats propeller became tangled in the reeds" "the boats propeller became entangled in the reeds" both the same take your pick. here you have the cause the reeds"en" and the past tense. "ed"

Hi Nanako, I would add as well that the word 'entangle' offers more intricate detail. It is still talking about something that's 'tangled', but when you hear 'entangle', you also understand that there is a process to reach that state. It suggests a participation in the process. I hope this doesn't add any confusion! Linguistically, this is a very interesting question! Caitlin

To entangle means to be the one that is twisting the yarn, net,... in such a way that it becomes hard to separate. To tangle means to become mixed or intertwined. Hope this helps, if not just ask.
