"Trust you are well", how often is it used as an opening in the emails?

"Trust you are well."

I came across this sentence a few times but I used to interpret it as trust yourself and you'll be fine until today... I realize it can be seen as "I hope you're doing well" or "I hope this email finds you well"? How often it is used as an opening in the emails or mails? Is it more formal?

To me, it means "I hope and assume you are well." It sounds a little formal, but it would be more formal if you put "I" at the beginning. It's not super common. It would be more common to say "I hope you're doing well" or "I hope this email finds you well."

There are a thousand and more ways to start an email.
The most commonly used way is not always what you are seeking.
.
As you can see be the answer and comments below, people have their preferences. The one you quote in your question is a fine way to start.
Sometimes starting with the most informal of greetings is less appropriate.
