I think Chinese are really friendly to foreigners and the only thing foreigners shouldn't do is not to be so rude which I think is common everywhere. However, maybe you should not say too much thanks to Chinese friends because if Chinese are friends they think it's natural to help each other. If you always say thanks, it implies that you don't consider him/her as your friend.

I can't help it sometimes haha but the way I'd say thanks to a friend is different from the way I'd thank a stranger, so I think it's still fine :)
