I was born in Kyoto, Japan and raised there. I've lived in many countries by now such as USA (Pennsylvania, Vermont), The Philippines, Indonesia, Tunisia, India, Uruguay, Hungary. And now I live in Japan and New Zealand half and half.
In some countries, I worked as a project coordinator of Japan's Official Development Assistance projects. I totally enjoyed the nature of this job, working together with the local people; living in different cultures; being emerged in new languages.
I enjoy learning foreign languages. I've studied about ten different languages like English, Spanish, Tagalog (Pilipino), Bahasa Indonesia, Hungarian, Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese), French, German, and Tamil.
Me as a Teacher
I've got many years of experience.
My first experience was in the Philippines. I was a volunteer sent by the Japanese government and taught at the Foreign Service Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. My students at that time were all adults mainly government officials.
After that I went to New Zealand to continue teaching Japanese at a university and also secondary schools.
Upon returning to Japan, I taught English to the young Japanese volunteers who were going out to some developing countries for their tasks.
Aside from the many years of teaching experiences, my knowledge of multiple languages helps understand the students' psychology and I can help them effectively.
My lessons & teaching style
My lessons are various depending on a student. I try to cater the student's need and likes.
Many of my students are focusing on their speaking ability. So they prepare their topics to talk about. Some students like to read a Japanese novels, so we read the same book together and discuss about the book in class. Some students write essays before the class and we discuss the writing.
The speed of class is also varies. Some students want to take their time, so we go slow. Some others are eager to learn as much as possible in a short time, so we go very fast.
Some students find most of the existing Japanese textbooks boring, so they find some other reading materials, like Manga!

In today's lesson I prepared a short story on how when I was a young kid I fell asleep on the boat while traveling alone for the first time, ending up in the wrong city. Chieko helped me correct it, and also provided input on more appropriate words to use. We also worked a bit with new patterns in the textbook. I enjoy our conversations and I learn a lot from them!

My lesson was fun as always and I've been feeling a little better about my listening comprehension lately. I still struggle when watching TV, news, as expected, but conversationally/face-to-face I feel more positive. :) We talked about work, and my upcoming shamisen lesson (which was amazing and can't wait to talk about next time)!

I have been self-studying Japanese for about a year mainly through reading and listening. I was nervous to begin speaking practice, but having recently moved to Japan it became apparent that I really needed to get started!
I decided to book a lesson with Chieko sensei, and boy am I glad I did! Chieko sensei is lovely and was able to immediately help improve my speaking ability, reading, grammar and vocabulary. She's patient, engaging, and explains concepts clearly and concisely. Plus, she has a youtube channel filled with great immersion content (the cow videos are my favorites.)
If you're feeling apprehensive about starting tutoring, don't be! Book Chieko sensei and start making progress towards your language goals!

Such a wonderful and helpful first lesson - I had expected to need more time to go over what I needed for my trip, but Chieko sensei jumped in immediately and covered so much ground! Thank you!
