I have a diverse career path, from semi-professional tennis in my youth, to an MSc. in Civil Engineering from Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands, a PhD in Coastal Engineering from the University of Aberdeen, to the arts. As a multi-award-winning visual artist and filmmaker I work collaboratively with dance, music, spoken word and Artificial Intelligence. I use my academic skills where teaching, sharing knowledge and refining skills are key ingredients, and apply that within teaching Dutch. As a teacher I am mentor, conversation partner, and motivator. I was born and raised in the Netherlands by an English mother and a Dutch father. I have lived in the UK for the last 20 years
Me as a Teacher
I have a long track record of tutoring university (bachelor and master) students, marking exam papers and lab books, guiding and supervising secondary school pupils, teaching English and Dutch to secondary school children and teaching English and Dutch to young adults in developing countries. Over the years I have had many students join my online programme. I am a patient and excellent communicator, so whether you would like to have a free flow conversation or follow an organised programme of lessons I can cater for everybody and tailor to any level depending on the student's needs.
My lessons & teaching style
The student's needs and requirements are discussed and targets are set to address these. I use a communicative learning pathway that suits the needs of language students: understanding, speaking, writing and reading Dutch. All lessons are conversation lessons in Dutch. Meaning, pronunciation and grammatical structures are offered and learned through given texts. The most frequently used words of the Dutch language are used in the texts. You can write me stories of your day, work, or hobbies, we can translate poetry, or talk about art, your passions, enjoyable topics of conversation during the lesson so that we get to know each other a bit while we learn.

Really great experience, Kate is able to help me with my specific language requirements. She adjusts and challenges me at a level that makes it both fun and improves my languages skills.

Kate is very humane. She takes the time to listen and makes me at ease before debuting the lesson. She is knowledgeable and promptly eager to share her insights about pronunciation and grammar. The flow of the lesson is fluid, it’s an enjoyable experience and it seems natural.

This was my first lesson with Kate and I really enjoyed it. With her friendly and lovely manner she created a familiar atmosphere which made it easy for me to speak freely. She corrected my mistakes in a descreet way and gave support to find the right translation for what I wanted to convey. Unfortunatly, the time flew by way too fast. Thank you!
