About Me

I've been teaching languages for over 10 years with 6 years' experience in universities and 6 online. As a fellow language learner who is fascinated by how acquisition works, I know what works and what doesn't. We learn languages through stories and interactions that sustain our interest. In my classes, you do learn about the patterns of a language (the "grammar rules" colloquially) but this is not the focus of the classes.
You can expect:

❇️Classes focused on listening & speaking about ideas, with occasional structured tasks to address difficulties that arise.
❇️To get better at using the language even though you aren't spending most of your time focused on rules.
Me as a Teacher
My goal is to get my students competent, comfortable and confident speaking the language, not just conjugating verbs by heart in isolation or performing controlled written exercises. When you work with me you will receive:
❇️An accurate assessment of your current level, strengths, difficulties.
❇️Appropriate challenge, genuine compliments, feedback about what you can do better and how.
❇️I write stories and create lessons from scratch for YOU with your interests, goals, and level of understanding in mind.
❇️You will be immersed in story-worlds and discuss characters, ideas, and themes as much as you please. The more you engage with the material, the more you will get out of the lessons.My lessons & teaching style
❇️ Material sent ahead of time: a recording, a PDF with the transcript of the story, vocabulary, and notes on grammar.
❇️ Lesson focused on listening and speaking the target language: listen to the 2nd part of the story, discuss the characters and ideas presented.
❇️ The focus is not on grammar, words in isolation or mechanical drills. Occasionally, I will provide tasks to address persistent pronunciation and grammar difficulties.
❇️ Informed by Dr. Stephen Krashen's Input Hypothesis & Blaine Ray's story-learning

Doctorate - FrenchMy specialization is French and I also completed an interdisciplinary specialization in Second Language Acquisiton (SLA), as well as college teacher training & apprenticeships. Please note EDUTL 5620 (Summer 2012), French 8301 (Spring 2013), and French 8302 (Spring 2014) as my SLA courses. French 801 (Autumn 2011) is teacher training, and 2 French 8303 apprenticeships are noted in Autumn 2013 &2014. You can see the titles of the courses on the transcript as well as the grades.

Master's - FrenchMaster's degree awarded as part of combined M.A. + PhD program that is still ongoing. Other - French Cultural Studies InstituteParticipated in biennial invitation-only 2-month workshop for 25 professors and advanced doctoral students in French studies. Attended meetings & lectures on the theme of "La politique et le politique" as well as pedagogy workshops. Created syllabus on voyeurism and voyage in 18th- and 19th-century literature. Fully sponsored by my home department.

Graduate Teaching AssociateI have been teaching as an instructor in the Department of French and Italian since I began my graduate studies at Ohio State University in 2011. I have been the sole, independent instructor of basic language classes as well as intermediate cultural classes in literature, cinema, and culture. I have taught all levels of the introductory French sequence for beginners and I have taught accelerated summer classes for four years, a competitive position, contingent on excellent student evaluations.

I've trialed a few Spanish teachers and the one I keep going back to is Guyomar, she is honestly one of the best. She is always punctual and prepared for each lesson. Her lessons go through different themes as well as language concepts so I am expanding my vocabulary but she also gives suggestions on different authors, podcasts, and videos to enjoy in your spare time. She picks up the patterns of my mistakes and addresses them. The lessons are immersed in the language I'm learning and she is always encouraging conversations to push my language skills. Her lessons are very detailed, easy to follow, and productive. Moreover, she's very fun to talk to so I look forward to every lesson. I highly recommend her!

I've made it to the end of my third package with Guyomar, and I've truly enjoyed working with her all the way. Her creative and meticulously prepared lessons, which are always tailored to her students' levels and personal interests, have helped me progress from a beginning self-study learner, hardly able to function in my new Francophone environment, to a more confident and versatile speaker able to do some professional work in the language. Now I'm in a position to think about getting a French-language certification, which is not a point I've reached with any previous foreign language I've studied.
