About Me
italki teacher since Oct 17, 2019
My name is Martin. I am from Chicago, USA. I graduated from university with a degree in anthropology. I really enjoy traveling, music, cooking, and meeting new people. I have traveled to many countries in Asia and Europe and I have met people from all corners of the world. I am also learning Japanese so I know well what it is like to be a student learning a language!
Me as a Teacher
After graduating from university, I was accepted into the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) Program. I lived and taught English in Japan from July 2015 until July 2019. I taught at Japanese public schools at the junior high school, elementary school, and kindergarten levels. In my free time, I also joined an English conversation circle with Japanese adults. I have experience teaching all ages and levels of English students. I also coached students for local speech contests. In 2018 one of my students won the prefecture contest and continued to the national championship.
My lessons & teaching style
I believe in a patient teaching style that matches each student's needs. I am experienced in teaching many levels of students. I can change my lessons to help all students. I believe in the communicative approach to language teaching. I do not believe the teacher should lecture at the student. A good class involves input from both the student and teacher. Accuracy is important, but I believe that fluency is extremely important when learning a language. I highly value learning communication and pronunciation.
