Hey, I’m Abu. I was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa but I’m originally from Mali through my father. I started teaching on italki because I wanted to work on the internet and one of the ways I can do that is by helping people improve their language skills. After having a few jobs and even working at a language center, I decided that creating a path for myself online is the best choice and I’ve been happy ever since.
I’m determined and I love challenges that make me a better person. Since I started, I’ve had over 2500 hours of lesson time, tutoring students from over 50 different countries around the world.Me as a Teacher
I'm tolerant, patient, and understanding and I think these qualities are needed to teach something new to someone.
These qualities allow students to be relaxed during the lesson, which is very important for learning.
I have a clear South African accent that is easy to understand. Depending on the level of the student, I speak at a comprehensible pace.
I know three languages: English, French and Turkish.
I also love interacting with other people, having good conversations, and learning about their countries and cultures because I think it’s also beneficial for me.

2022 - 2022
English TeacherFor five months (April-July), I worked part-time as an English tutor at American Life in Samsun, Türkiye. Though I’d helped friends before, this was my first formal tutoring job. I taught several 1-hour group conversation classes each week, which helped me gain confidence in speaking to groups and teaching new concepts. I enjoy helping others, and teaching English gives me that rewarding feeling of making a difference.
2022 - 2024
English TutorI started teaching on Italki as soon as I completed my 120-hour TEFL certificate. I saw it as a way to enter the online market and I soon realized that I enjoyed the one-on-one lessons. I’ve been able to help others improve their communication skills as well as my own. This experience has helped me learn more about myself, and what I want from life and it motivates me to improve.

Bachelor’s - International Trade and LogisticsI moved to Türkiye in 2018 and spent a year learning Turkish before starting university. Studying in a different language was challenging and often demotivating—I even considered quitting. However, I’m glad I persevered. During university, I developed an interest in international trade, especially after taking International Business and Marketing during my third and fourth year. I want to be an expert in this field.
