I am Lily. I majored in sociology at university, then I dedicated myself to language teaching and I got the certification of teaching Chinese. I teach and have a podcast.
I love learning languages and I truly value the communication of different cultures. I think expressing oneself and practice are the two most important things for learning a language. I am truly grateful that the course I give makes a difference in some students' lives, which fuels my enthusiasm and confidence.
Not only are the evolution of my own skills and perspectives my best reward, but also the relationship I build with students. May curiosity, critical thinking, and collaboration always follow all of us.

Me as a Teacher
As a teacher, I live by these principles
1. I'm always punctual
2. I always have a detailed lesson plan and provide feedback
3. Always focus on your learning objective and not afraid to deviate from my teaching plan if it's in your best interest
Most of my students are motivated to learn Chinese, but tired and busy, too. I make each lesson very informative and efficient. I speak only in Chinese and explain it on the whiteboard, gesturing the tone and rhythm. While breaking up a sentence on screen, I model how they're constructed to make students think over grammar. Also, I ask creative questions for students to reply to. Being attentive and energized will make learning easy.
My lessons & teaching style
There are two courses.
1. General Chinese & HSK:it's for all grades with a textbook provided. It ensures you are strong in all four language skills :listening, speaking, reading and writing. By my tying vocabulary and conversation into one's daily life, knowledge is passed. With a webpage for uploading homework, I will track students' learning and correct it.
2. Conversation practice:it's for people whose level of Chinese is above A2. It's about how to make a beautiful conversation flow spontaneously. I will continuously introduce words and patterns for students to speak on. I won't interrupt but offer essential supplements and revise by rephrasing sentences, then send the notes to students.

Teacher’s pick
I thought I could learn Mandarin by teaching myself, but after about 4 months of self study, I realised this was not a good choice for me. So I found out about italki and booked a trial lesson with Lily.
It has been a year since that trial lesson and I have had at least 1 lesson per week with Lily ever since.
A year ago I think only knew about 2 words in Mandarin, but I am now typing, reading and conversing in Mandarin. I still have a long way to go with my studies, but I would have definitely given up learning without Lily.
She is a very patient and attentive teacher. Lily takes the time to ensure that my pronunciation is spot on, and ensures that I understand specific grammar points by asking questions, and getting me to answer them in different ways.
I decided to book a trip to China this year, and because of Lily’s lessons, feel confident that I’ll be able to get by!
I would definitely recommend Lily as a teacher to anyone thinking about learning Mandarin.

I lived in China for 7.5 years and have had many different Chinese tutors. Lily is by far the best one I've had as she pushes my speaking skills more than any other. She finds creative ways to ask questions and tie the vocabulary into my daily life and experiences. By modeling how sentences are constructed, I am able to figure out the grammar and if I am ever unsure, she breaks it down on screen. I have probably learned more grammar rules in 10 lessons than I ever did in years of having a tutor in China. I would highly recommend giving Lily a shot as your teacher! She won't disappoint!

3 reasons why Lily is an amazing teacher:
1.Lily is always on time, her professionalism is what sets her apart from all the other tutors.
2.I’ve had over a dozen lessons with her and she is consistent with her lessons. She is attentive, speaks slowly and explains grammar points meticulously.
3.Lastly, I think Lily has a very easy going personality, which makes learning Chinese a breath of fresh air.

I love the fact that whenever possible, Lily doesn't speak to you in English but in Chinese, writing at the same time the translation in English. So you hear almost only chinese during the lesson.
