I love learning languages for the infinite possibilities learning a language brings: the chance to travel, to form new connections with people, and to see a glimpse of the world through the lens of another culture! My hobbies also include reading, occasionally writing, gardening, and visiting parks. I spent my childhood in the diverse suburbs of Dallas, Texas and currently live in Illinois.Me as a Teacher
I am a certified educator with a degree in Secondary English Education, an English Language Arts teaching license, and TEFL certificate. My teaching experience includes working with students for one-on-one tutoring, leading small groups, and full-class instruction at a multicultural school with ESL learners. Additionally, I taught English online to children in China for two years using phonics, grammar, and vocabulary-building strategies. I believe language acquisition is best achieved when language is learned in the same context as it will be used. My lessons include a variety of real-life materials (such as recipes, news articles, role-plays, and video clips), adjusted to the level and interests of each student. This encourages students to view language as a tool to negotiate and share meaning, rather than a set of words and rules to memorized. As a result, students learn in a way that will allow them to be confident using English outside the classroom.My teaching material

Intern at Midway HighschoolInterned with a co-teacher at Midway High School during the 2017-2018 school year. As an intern, I assisted in teaching both 9th grade honors English and AP English Literature (a high school course students can complete for college credit after taking an exam). My experience with essay writing (including persuasive, narrative, and analytical essays) can also be used to support students on the italki platform.
2018 - 2019
8th Grade ELA (English Language Arts) TeacherAs an English teacher at Long International Middle School in the SLPS (Saint Louis Public Schools) school district, I had the opportunity to work with students from a variety of backgrounds, many of whom were speaking English as a second or third language. Many of the strategies I used to support these students in order to be successful (such as using sentence stems and targeted vocabulary activities) translate directly to teaching English online through 1-on-1 tutoring.

My teacher is always patient and attentive. She gives me the opportunity to ask questions if I don't understand something, and she always keeps to the schedule. She is a dedicated teacher with a wealth of knowledge and feedback. I am a little worried that if I praise her too much, it will be difficult for me to book her next time. I have been taking lessons with her regularly for a long time.

Lauren is definitely my favorite teacher! She is really kind and patient, especially for my mistakes and hesitation during the classes. Lauren has great skill in documenting mistakes and improvements in the doc. After every class, she shares notes for our class which can be a great resource for me to review. And I like the homework she assigned to me, which is interesting and inclusive. I've learned a lot from these materials. Really appreciate all the work she's done. It has been such a great experience learning English with Lauren. Will definitely register her classes again in the future!
