Thus, it sounds very different from tone languages such as Mandarin Chinese or Cantonese. In tone languages, pitch (the degree of highness or lowness of a tone) is used to distinguish word meaning. So a word said with high pitch may have a different meaning than the same word said with a low pitch. ☆ In English, much information is carried by the use of auxiliaries and by verb inflections: is/are/were, eat/eats/ate/eaten, etc. Chinese, on the other hand, is an uninflected language and conveys meaning through word order, adverbials or shared understanding of the context.

There are times when a foreigner asks me about an English or Indonesian expression or spelling which I had taken for granted. For example: Does “news” mean “many new things” because it ends with an “s”? Why do you say “the news doesn’t sound good” instead of “the news don’t sound good”? Then, I’d have to look up some sources to be able to answer that the word “news” is plural in form but singular in construction. With Japanese, it’s the other way around.
