We can talk about the cultures of different countries, current affairs or about art, music, literature, film and TV. This is a good way of getting comfortable in a language and of using words and phrases that are actually useful. We can look at a song together and think about the words. Perhaps you can learn the words of songs by heart for your homework in order to memorise useful expressions.
