I've been a Italki tutor for some months now. I use explanations, avoiding focusing too much (unless it was explicitly required) on the grammar part. On the other hand, given that I studied Latin and ancient Greek, if the students wanted it, we could also examine in depth the etim of the words and the structure of the phrase.
