Hello, this is episode 11 of season 2 of my podcast. I am currently studying Social Education Management at university. The number of university textbooks is increasing and I am running out of space on my bookshelves. I prefer e-books to paper books for textbooks. But I like going to bookshops.

最近日本語の授業で、お寺と神社に行くときのマナーについて質問がありました。イスラム教のモスクに入る時は、薄着ではいけません。「薄着」とは、あまり服を着ていない状態のことです。たとえば、夏の服装です。たくさん服を着ている状態は、「厚着」と言います。日本では宗教に入っていない人の割合が60%以上なので、宗教に関するルールはあまり厳しくありません。お寺で祈る時は、胸の前で手を合わせたまま、お辞儀を１回します。神社では、お辞儀を２回して、そのあと２回手を叩いて、最後にもう一度お辞儀をします。お寺で祈る時は、手を叩いてはいけません。

In a recent Japanese class, there was a question about etiquette when visiting temples and shrines. When entering a Muslim mosque, you must not wear usugi. 'Usugi' (light clothing) means not wearing much clothing. For example, summer clothing. Wearing a lot of clothes is called 'atsugi' (heavy clothing). In Japan, more than 60% of people are not religious, so the rules regarding religion are not very strict. When praying at a temple, you bow once, keeping your hands clasped in front of your chest. At shrines, you bow twice, then clap your hands twice and bow again at the end. When praying at a temple, you must not clap your hands.

Astăzi a fost ziua de naștere a lui Matei. El este născut pe 05.mai.2000. A împlinit 23 de ani. M-am gândit foarte mult timp ce cadou ar fi potrivit pentru el și cum ne-am apucat recent să învățăm tenis am ales să îi cumpăr o rachetă. M-am documentat ce rachetă s-ar potrivi cu stilul lui de joc și cu experiența și am ales una de la Wilson, verde. Pentru a sărbători am invitat prietenii în oraș, la un bowling, iar după la noi acasă unde am comandat o pizza. A fost frumos: am râs, am spus, am povestit. Când i-am cântat ,,La mulți ani” Matei s-a emoționat. Am obervat ca toți ne emoționăm atunci când ni se cântă ,,La mulți ani”. Este ceva special, simți că toți oamenii care s-au strâns alături de tine îți celebrează viața și că se bucură că te-au întâlnit.

When we feel we have had a "setback" in our language learning - we often tell ourselves stories that keep us stuck. In this podcast episode, I will offer some ideas for how we can prevent that from happening, and when it does, how we can start to move forward again.

In summary, what I say is that first we need to assess what has REALLY happened. And we need to look at the STORY we are telling ourselves - about what happened. (We can do this by writing or talking to a coach or a friend or to ourselves using the questions below). 

If we can question the stories we have told ourselves about this setback - it becomes easier to take action to get ourselves moving again. Byron Katie is an author who created 4 questions that are helpful in changing our beliefs. The questions are: 1. Is it true? 2. Can I absolutely know that it’s true? 3. How do I react when I believe that thought? 4. Who would I be without that thought? 

Turning the setback into an opportunity to take action - any action - can help us get moving again. Getting support is also very helpful. 

Writing or speaking exercise (talk into your phone!) -- take 7-10 minutes and see what you discover!:

1. Think of a time when you were trying something new (learning to play a musical instrument, starting a new routine, exercise or diet) - and you had a "perceived setback" - or when you felt you hit a wall/were blocked/"failed." What did you tell yourself at that time? Was that "story" really true? What happened after that? Did you continue doing the thing? 

2. Now think of a skill you have mastered. Maybe it's cooking something or riding a bike or being a professional or an entrepreneur. Did you ever have any "setbacks" along the way? (I am sure you did!) What steps did you take to keep going forward? Did you get support to move past these obstacles - or how did you help yourself to continue? What happened next?
