STEPHANIE: Hi, Luke! How are you? Can you please stop and pick up 
extra paper for the computer printer?
LUKE: What did you say? Can you repeat that, please? Did you 
say to pick up ink for the printer? Sorry, the phone is 
cutting out.
STEPHANIE: Can you hear me now? No, I need more computer paper. 
Listen, I’ll text you exactly what I need. Thanks, Luke. 
Talk to you later.
LUKE: Thanks, Stephanie. Sorry, my phone has really bad
reception here.



LANGUAGE NOTES
• There are a few ways to express a lack of understanding and to request additional 
information. The most common ones are stated, but you can also say “Excuse me” or 
simply “I can’t hear you.” In a more formal situation, try saying “I’m sorry?” or “I beg 
your pardon?” (with a rising intonation).
• When asking someone to clarify information try saying Can you please repeat that? / 
Can you spell that for me? / Can you please write down the address for me?
• Cutting out describes a difficulty in understanding a caller due to poor cellphone 
reception. If you are having trouble understanding the caller, you can also say The 
line is breaking up / I am losing you. If the phone call is disconnected because of poor 
reception, you can say The call dropped.
• Talk to you later is the equivalent in a phone conversation of “See you later” in a 
regular, face-to-face conversation.
• Reception here means the availability of cellular service, the possibility to receive and 
give calls on a cellphone. Cellphone reception can be limited in remote areas, inside 
large buildings or underground (in the subway, for instance).

Pedro Paulo Pereira Pinto, pequeno pintor português, pintava portas, paredes, portais. Porém, pediu para parar porque preferiu pintar panfletos. Partindo para Piracicaba, pintou prateleiras para poder progredir. Posteriormente, partiu para Pirapora. Pernoitando, prosseguiu para Paranavaí, pois pretendia praticar pinturas para pessoas pobres. Porém, pouco praticou, porque Padre Paulo pediu para pintar panelas, porém posteriormente pintou pratos para poder pagar promessas. Pálido, porém perseverante, preferiu partir para Portugal para pedir permissão para papai para permanecer praticando pinturas, preferindo, portanto, Paris. Partindo para Paris, passou pelos Pirineus, pois pretendia pintá-los. Pareciam plácidos, porém, pesarosos, percebeu penhascos pedregosos, preferindo pintá-los parcialmente, pois perigosas pedras pareciam precipitar-se principalmente pelo Pico, porque pastores passavam pelas picadas para pedirem pousada, provocando provavelmente pequenas perfurações, pois, pelo passo percorriam, permanentemente, possantes potrancas. Pisando Paris, pediu permissão para pintar palácios pomposos, procurando pontos pitorescos, pois, para pintar pobreza, precisaria percorrer pontos perigosos, pestilentos, perniciosos, preferindo Pedro Paulo precaver-se. Profundas privações passou Pedro Paulo. Pensava poder progredir pintando, porém, pretas previsões passavam pelo pensamento, provocando profundos pesares, principalmente por pretender partir prontamente para Portugal. Povo previdente! Pensava Pedro Paulo… Preciso partir para Portugal porque pedem para prestigiar patrícios, pintando principais portos portugueses. Passando pela principal praça parisiense, partindo para Portugal, pediu para pintar pequenos pássaros pretos. Pintou, prostrou perante políticos, populares, pobres, pedintes. Paris! Paris! Proferiu Pedro Paulo. -Parto, porém penso pintá-la permanentemente, pois pretendo progredir *não coube todo o texto, caso queria integrar, me mande uma mensagem que lhe passo!

As a beginner, there're some vocabularies that you didn't learn before, and native speaker's speed seems too fast to understand. But don't worry, let's do it step by step. 
1st time: listen and catch the words you know alreay, have a guess about the content.
2nd time: look at the text to check if you guessed it right. 
3rd time: listen one more time, repeat after it.
4th time: practise until you can speak as the normal speed without looking at the text.

wǒ zǎo shàng qī diǎn shí wǔ fēn qǐ chuáng 。
I get up at 7:15 in the morning.
先刷牙洗脸，然后吃早饭。
xiān shuā yá xǐ liǎn ， rán hòu chī zǎo fàn 。
Brush teeth and wash face first, then eat breakfast.
8点半我坐地铁去公司。
bā diǎn bàn wǒ zuò dì tiě qù gōng sī 。
At 8:30 I take the subway to the company.
