La leyenda del Hombre Caimán proviene de la región del río Magdalena, especialmente en el pueblo de Plato, Magdalena. La historia cuenta que un hombre llamado Saúl Solarte, muy curioso y coqueto, tenía la costumbre de espiar a las mujeres cuando se bañaban en el río. Para hacerlo sin ser visto, fue a donde un brujo, quien le dio una poción que lo convertía en caimán durante el día, para poder nadar y espiar sin levantar sospechas.

Al principio, Saúl lograba volver a su forma humana cada vez que lo deseaba, pero un día, el hechizo falló. Se quedó atrapado en el cuerpo de un caimán, conservando solo su cabeza humana. Desde entonces, el Hombre Caimán ha vivido en el río, ocultándose entre los animales y esperando una cura que le permita volver a ser humano.

Las mujeres del pueblo tienen mucho cuidado al acercarse al río, por miedo a que el Hombre Caimán las ataque o las persiga. Se dice que por las noches, su lamento puede oírse desde las orillas del río, arrepentido por su curiosidad y mal comportamiento.
