So when I was deciding which topic to focus on for our second episode I really only needed to look at what the people I work with are actually asking for. One of the most common topics that I discuss with people is presentations. Presentations can be great opportunities to use those English skills that you work so hard on, but they also have their own stresses and challenges. Today we’re going to look at some vocabulary that you might hear when watching a presentation and some that you might want to use when giving your own. At the end we also have our 'big discussion question' to help you with your speaking practice. You can find the vocabulary from this podcast in the vocabulary sets on my profile. Imagine a chance meeting at a conference – a fleeting opportunity to make a strong impression. That's the power of an elevator pitch, a succinct introduction that sparks interest and sets you apart. Here's how to craft yours for networking success:

Grab Attention in the First 10 Seconds:  A captivating opening is key. Are you passionate about solving a specific industry challenge? Briefly mention it and how your expertise can be the solution. For instance, "I'm a data analyst with a knack for uncovering hidden insights that boost marketing campaign effectiveness."

Introduce Yourself Professionally:  In a sentence or two, state your profession and a key area of strength.  Keep it clear and concise. Example: "I'm a marketing specialist with a proven track record in developing high-performing social media strategies."

Highlight Your Value Proposition:  This is where you showcase what sets you apart.  It could be a unique skill, a successful project you've led, or a specific achievement that demonstrates your value. Don't just list duties; focus on results. Example: "I recently spearheaded a social media campaign that generated a 30% increase in qualified leads for my company."

End with a Clear Call to Action:  A strong call to action leaves a lasting impression and encourages further conversation.  Do you want to connect on LinkedIn? Offer to share a relevant case study or discuss your expertise in more detail?  Keep it specific and actionable.

Craft, Refine, and Conquer:

Practice your pitch out loud to refine its delivery. Aim for clarity, enthusiasm, and a natural conversational tone. Time yourself – it should be under 30 seconds to hold attention in a busy environment.

Bonus Tip: Tailor Your Message:  A one-size-fits-all approach won't cut it. Research the event or organization beforehand. Highlight skills and experiences relevant to their interests.

Follow these steps, you'll craft a memorable elevator pitch that captures attention, showcases your value.

Humans love stories. From a young age, we hear them, tell them, write them and watch them. As we get older, they're still a big part of our lives.

We tell stories every day, whether it's at work or when we tell a friend about the things we're doing in our lives.

And stories might just be one of the secrets to giving a good business presentation. "Stories connect with people much more than statistics," says Mahnoor Sheikh from Visme, a presentation company.

And with any business presentation, you want to leave an impression on the people you're presenting to.

To do this, according to the team from jobs website Indeed, you first have to understand your audience. Who are they? What do they need to know to get excited about what you have to say?

During your presentation, you want to share your own enthusiasm with the audience and involve them with eye contact, says TED curator Chris Anderson.

To begin, the Indeed team says, you need to prepare a strong start to your presentation, which will let you form a connection with your audience.

Next, you have to keep that connection — and you have to be careful.

If you're using presentation software, keep your slides simple. They're just there to help you communicate, says Sheikh. If they're full of text, people may begin reading the slides and stop listening to you.

And don't read from a teleprompter, says Anderson. If you do, you'll lose your connection with the audience. Either memorize your presentation, or use brief points on cards or slides to guide you.

Finally, Indeed says, give the audience something to think about when they leave the room. You had a strong start — now finish telling your story in the same way!

It's also important to have done your research — because you may have to answer questions from your audience at the end!
