This is a picture of the Philippine flag being hanged side by side with the American flag at Walmart. At first, I was shocked that our flag was being hanged inside a grocery store in the United States. I didn’t really like it at first because it feels like we are taking over the place that’s not ours. But later on, when I saw a lot of Filipino workers inside the grocery store, I realized that maybe it’s just a way of making the store to feel a little bit like the Philippines. Inside the store, there are Filipino snacks which were rarely sold in American grocery stores. Some customers even look like they’re from Filipino descent. The Filipino hegemonic feeling, that I felt at first, might be just an overeaction from my point of view. I guess the people who put our flag inside the store just wanted to emphasize their Filipino-American identity rather than making the store to look like a Filipino grocery store.
