Aurora
Hello everyone! My Chinese name is Yan MAI, can you please help me choose an English name? Or do you think Aurora would suit me? Because I want to go to Northern Europe to see the Aurora Borealis and I love the Aurora Borealis. Do you think this English name will sound weird?

Choosing an English name is a personal decision, and there are many factors to consider. If you like the name Aurora and it has personal significance to you, then it could be a good choice. Aurora is a beautiful name and has a connection to the Northern Lights, which you mentioned you love. However, it's important to note that it may not be a common name in some parts of the world and may be mispronounced or misspelled by some people. Ultimately, the choice of an English name is up to you and what you feel comfortable with.

In general I don't think it's necessary for people to adopt an anglicised (English style) name. Many English speaking countries and communities are now very multi-cultural. Partly because lots of people who have foreign origins live in many English speaking countries, and partly because we consume media (films, TV, internet, etc) from all over the world. Therefore we are familiar with non English names, and most people are very, very flexible about trying to pronounce foreign names (and maybe the very small minority who don't like to pronounce foreign names are not the sort of people that you should be friends with anyway?) . On the other hand it's true that some names are very difficult for us if they contain sounds that don't exist in English. In your specific case I don't think it would be difficult for most English speakers to pronounce an approximate version of your name "Yan" ...we might not be sure if we should say "Mai" as 'may' or 'mi'.... but it's not a big problem. If you want to use Aurora as a sort of nickname, then I think that's very suitable... but be prepared for lots of people who then excitedly ask you how you got that name (questions like "Did your parents choose it?") ... and then you will probably still have to explain that your real name is Yan Mai :-)

If you like Aurora 🌄 because the meaning keep the name (is also works as a very Spanish name). As someone wrote, the decition of name is very personal. I will consider this option : - keep your original name. - Change for one that sounds similar.

I like “Aurora”. How about “Anna Mae”? It sounds similar to your true name. Two-part names for women are common, especially in the southern U.S.

Aurora is a possible name for a woman but it is not common these days. If your goal in having a Western name is to have a name that people will remember, you might want to choose something more conventional. What does your name mean in Chinese? It might be possible to choose a Western name that has a similar meaning.
