Be consisted of Do you use that form[ be consisted of]? I saw many [be consisted of] forms on the internet. But, teachers seem to say that it's wrong and only [consist of] form is correct.

Ok so….to be strict, consist isn’t a transitive verb and therefore doesn’t use a passive form. So breakfast consists of cereals and bread is correct English but breakfast is consisted of cereals and bread isn’t. However, given that we do like to break and corrupt grammar rules here in England, you do hear people say “is consisted of” occasionally. It’s grammatically wrong but people speak to communicate, not to follow strict grammar rules. So it happens! I’d prefer to say breakfast consists of, or breakfast is made up of, but not break the grammar rules!

Your teacher is correct. CONSIST OF basically means IS MADE UP OF. So if you say IS CONSISTED, it's basically like saying the TO BE part twice. Maybe the examples you've seen on the internet are confusing CONSISTED with words like COMPOSED. Breakfast was composed of . . . etc. is correct.

The form "be consisted of" is indeed incorrect in standard English. The correct form is simply "consist of," used without the passive construction. The verb "consist" already implies a state of being and does not need to be put into the passive voice. Here’s how it’s typically used: ✅ Correct: "The team consists of five members." ❌ Incorrect: "The team is consisted of five members." Consist functions as a stative verb, which is why we don’t modify it with "be" in this way. Adding "be" (making it passive) would be redundant and incorrect. You might find "be consisted of" online due to non-native speaker usage or misunderstanding, but in formal or correct usage, "consist of" is the right choice.

You're correct to question it! "Be consisted of" is not a standard or grammatically correct form in English. The correct expression is simply "consist of." Here's how it works: "Consist of" is an intransitive verb phrase, meaning it doesn’t take a passive form. So, instead of saying "is consisted of," we just use "consists of" (or "consist of" for plural subjects). For example: ✅ Correct: "The team consists of five members." ❌ Incorrect: "The team is consisted of five members." Why "Be Consisted Of" Is Incorrect Since "consist" doesn’t require a passive construction, adding "be" doesn’t fit the standard grammar rules. Unlike verbs that imply an action done to something (like "is made of"), "consist of" describes a natural composition or structure, which doesn’t need a passive form. Other Correct Options If you’re looking for alternatives to vary your language, you could use phrases like: "is made up of" "is composed of" "is formed of" These can sometimes fit in similar contexts, but remember that "consists of" is the most straightforward and grammatically correct form. Thank you for double-checking—it’s a great example of how language learners are paying attention to detail!
