How can people watch horror movies without being frightened?
I am curious about this because I am scared of horror movies. I was frightened watching The Shining even if I had known the whole story before. And I had related nightmares after that.
Do you like horror movies? If you do, how can you watch horror movies without being frightened?

But isn’t the point of horror movies to get you scared? It’s like wanting to watch comedy without laughing, or to eat spicy food without feeling the burn. Some people enjoy the burn.

I'm a big fan of horror movies but I'm more shocked than scared every time I would watch one because the more you watch horror movies, the less scary it becomes. Seeing the ghosts or spirits in the movies alone don't scare me but the sound effects do. The sound effects are the ones that surprise me, otherwise, I would not be scared watching a horror movie at all

I dislike horror movies as well. There are probably just couple of them, which I like. I've only managed to remember "Sleepy Hollow" with Johnny Depp. Contemporary horror movies aren't horror movies at all! There are only senseless massacres, pools of blood, etc. It's just disgusting, but not horrifying.

@Ariana Yes the sound effects play a crucially important role in creating horror atmosphere! It is scary enough just "listening" to some horror movies.

I've seen a lot of horror movies, because I like the idea of them, but I think I've only ever seen one or two horror movies that actually scared me. But I'm always very impressed when a horror movie, or any movie, is really suspenseful or creepy. I think it's hard to achieve these things. Maybe it's because I'm not easily scared.

I agree with Dmitry, though, that most modern horror movies are just a lot of blood and violence, not true "horror," in the sense of being scary or spooky. For me, psychological thrillers are often better at creating a sense of "horror."
