The police is...or The police are...

A quick question for you. Which of the following is correct? And why?
1. "The police is invastigating this case."
2. "The police are invastigating this case."

I think 'are' is correct because 'police' means a group of people and its verb should be plural, but I've seen the sentence like 'the police is ___' just once if I remember correctly.

are - police is here a collective nooun and there is no distinct plural for police (singular and plural)
