CAE WRITING PART 1 -Write your answer in 220-260 words in an appropriate style. You have read an online article about changes in the types of subject taught at secondary schools. The article says that some traditional subjects may no longer be taught at school. Four of the subjects discussed are mentioned below, along with some of the readers’ comments. Which subjects may no longer be taught at secondary school? Music ‘Most students who are interested in music take lessons out of school.’ Geography ‘Why do we need to know the names of rivers and mountains around the world?’ History ‘It’s all about the past. At schools, we need to be focussing on the future.’ Art ‘Art lessons allow kids to explore their creativity.’ Write an essay discussing TWO of the subjects mentioned above. You should explain why you think these subjects should continue to be taught at secondary schools, giving reasons to support your answer. All lessons are important as far as they teach you something useful. Provided that , I think there are some subjects which must be studied at school and others which could be learnt somewhere else . If I had to choose between two disciplines I would hands down opt for history and geography. I'd say history because being aware of the past events is paramount to realise who we are , where do we come from and in order not to make the same mistakes our anchestors made . For that reason , I thoroughly not agree with with the reader's comment which claims that studying history stray ourselves from focusing on the future. It's fundamental though to learn history if we want to make the world , going forward , a better place. Another subject which deserves a space in schools' timetables is geography , also because history and geography are always linked to each other. In fact , it's essential and unavoidable to have knowledge of where the past events have occured to get an overall idea of the background. So there , geography is not just about getting to know the names of all the rivers and mountains around the world . It would be impossible , useless and highly exhausting. It's rather about distinguish different kind of landscapes and appreciate their beauties. In a nutshell , I firmly believe both history and geography should continue to be taught at school although the teaching methods should although radically change. By that , I mean lessons would be far more appreciated if they were more involving and dynamic. PS : If you could replace some words with others more polished and refined , I would really appreciate.
